THE SCARLET OAK BOOK TRIO

The Scarlet Oak Book Trio includes three designed publications using and building upon Henry David Thoreau’s The Scarlet Oak, each one showcasing a different type of book and focusing on typographic composition.

TRADITIONAL BOOK

The first iteration is a traditional book, set in the same way that a book would be typeset for a manual printing press.

MODERN BOOK

The second iteration is a modern book which brings in an accompanying essay called The Art of Seeing Nature, by Paul Brooks. In this iteration, I typeset the essays perpendicular to each other, adding a texture alluding to landscape, and thereby creating two different reading experiences. I also introduced vector images with the text.

INTRODUCTION OF PHOTOGRAPHY

For the third iteration, I introduced another layer of text, this time of my own authoring. I also added photographs that I captured, which were inspired by The Art of Seeing Nature. The title of the book Portrascapes is set in a custom combination of Neutra flourished with Odile glyphs.
